  1. 1

    Write today in five

On Today, write the five letters of your day. Once five are there, you can save. One entry per day.

  2. 2

Add a photo or a clip

After saving you can add one photo or one five-second video — from your library, the camera, or a sheet of paper. One per day.

  3. 3

    Make a backup

Settings > Back Up My Memories writes a backup to the FiveLeaf folder in your iCloud Drive. That file is how your memories move to a new phone.

Three things are enough for your first day.

Writing

Why five letters?

To keep it short. When you can write at length you start trying to write well, and trying is what makes people stop after a week. Five letters is choosing, not composing — that you can do every day.

Can I write more than once a day?

No. One entry per day. On a day you've already written, you can edit that entry instead.

How long can I edit?

Until noon the next day. Write at midnight and you still have the morning to change your mind. Deleting is always possible.

The counter seems off

Letters still being composed (unfinished Hangul or Japanese) aren't counted until they're complete. An emoji counts as the one character you see.

Can I fill in a past date?

No. There's no way to backfill. An empty day is that day's record too.

Photos and video

How long can a video be?

Five seconds. Pick something longer and you choose the five-second window yourself. Sound is kept.

Can I add both a photo and a video?

No — a day holds one of them. Adding a new one replaces what was there.

Does a filter change the original?

No. The original is kept as it is and the filter is applied when it's shown. Change the filter later, or remove it, and the original is untouched.

What about days without a photo?

That's fine. You can choose a sheet of paper instead, or nothing at all.

Keeping your memories

Do my memories follow me to a new phone?

Not on their own. They live on this device only. Before you switch, use Settings > Back Up My Memories, then on the new phone tap Restore from iCloud Drive.

Where does the backup go?

The FiveLeaf folder in your iCloud Drive. You can see it in the Files app, and it stays there even if you delete the app. One backup is kept — a new one replaces the last.

How often should I back up?

There's no schedule. On the first of each month a note arrives about the month behind you, and if you haven't backed up that month it mentions that too.

Does restoring erase what I have?

No. Restoring only adds. If a day is already there it's skipped and left exactly as it is. At the end you're told how many came back and how many were left alone.

Can I keep a backup somewhere else?

Settings > Export My Memories hands you the same file to put anywhere. Opening that file with FiveLeaf restores from it.

What's inside a backup?

Everything — letters, photos, video, times, places, colors. memories.json is plain text and the media are ordinary files, so nothing needs FiveLeaf to open. Rename it to .zip and it unpacks anywhere.

Locking and reminders

Can I hide one entry?

Lock it from its detail screen. A locked day hides its letters, photo, time, and place, and asks for Face ID or your passcode to open.

Can I change the reminder time?

Settings > Daily Reminder sets the time or turns it off. It starts at 9 in the evening.

I'm not getting reminders

Check iPhone Settings > Notifications > FiveLeaf. If you declined at first, that's where you can allow them again.

Privacy

Do my entries go to a server?

No. There is no server run by the developer. Your memories stay on this device, and reach your iCloud Drive only when you make a backup — only when you tap it. What does leave the app is the coordinates used for the place and the weather, plus crash and usage reports — never the contents of your entries.

How does it know the place?

On days you allow location, the coordinates go to Apple's services to get a city name and the weather at that moment back. The coordinates, the name and the weather are stored with that entry and go nowhere else.

What happens if I delete the app?

The memories on this device go with it. The backup in your iCloud Drive stays.

Still stuck?

Send these along and we can find the cause quickly. Please don't include the contents of your entries or any personal details.
